What Is Astrological Temperament?

It's not your sun sign. It's not your ascendant. It goes deeper.

When someone asks "what's your sign?", you answer with your sun sign. But traditional astrologers knew that a person's essence cannot be reduced to a single sign.

Astrological Temperament is a classical astrology calculation that combines 5 factors from your birth chart to determine which of the 4 fundamental temperaments dominates your constitution.

It's not a personality quiz. It's not based on opinion. It's a precise astronomical calculation based on the exact moment of your birth.

The 4 Temperaments In Depth

Which of these profiles describes you?

Choleric

FireHot + Dry

Choleric people walk into a room and the energy shifts. They are direct, decisive, and have no patience for beating around the bush. When they want something, they pursue it with a determination that can seem relentless.

Strengths: Natural leadership, quick decision-making, contagious energy, results-driven focus.
Challenges: Impatience, tendency to dominate, difficulty listening, burnout from excessive action.
Work: CEO, entrepreneur, surgeon, athlete, any field requiring decisiveness and courage.
Love: Intense lovers who need partners who can match their pace — and who aren't intimidated by their strength.

Sanguine

AirHot + Wet

Sanguine people are those who make friends in 5 minutes. Natural optimists, they see possibilities where others see problems. Conversation flows, ideas bubble up, and enthusiasm is genuine.

Strengths: Brilliant communication, adaptability, natural networking, spontaneous creativity.
Challenges: Difficulty focusing, forgotten promises, superficiality, fear of being alone.
Work: Marketing, sales, journalism, arts, teaching — any field involving people and communication.
Love: Fun and charming partners who need constant stimulation — routine is their greatest enemy.

Melancholic

EarthCold + Dry

Melancholic people think before they speak, analyze before they act, and notice details that no one else sees. They seem serious, but inside they carry an intense sensitivity and a pursuit of perfection.

Strengths: Exceptional analytical mind, attention to detail, emotional depth, unwavering loyalty.
Challenges: Tendency to self-criticism, analysis paralysis, difficulty forgiving, pessimism.
Work: Research, engineering, finance, art, writing — fields that reward depth and rigor.
Love: Slow to open their hearts, but when they do, it's forever. They need security and authenticity.

Phlegmatic

WaterCold + Wet

Phlegmatic people are the calmest person in the room, even in chaos. They listen more than they speak, feel more than they show, and have an almost supernatural ability to keep the peace.

Strengths: Deep empathy, patience, diplomacy, ability to mediate conflicts, emotional stability.
Challenges: Passivity, difficulty saying no, avoiding necessary conflicts, procrastination.
Work: Psychology, mediation, HR, healthcare, education — fields that value listening and care.
Love: Devoted and loyal partners who give everything for harmony — but who need to learn to stand up for their own desires.

The Science Behind 2,500 Years

From Hippocrates to William Lilly — why this system survived millennia

460 a.C.

Hippocrates (460 BC), the father of medicine, observed that people fell into 4 fundamental types based on the balance of bodily "humors".

129 d.C.

Galen (129 AD) systematized the theory and connected it to the elements: Fire, Air, Earth, and Water.

c. 1277

Guido Bonatti (13th century) connected temperaments directly to the birth chart in "Liber Astronomiae".

1647

William Lilly (1647) refined the method in "Christian Astrology", the reference work to this day.

The 5 Calculation Factors

Each factor has a different weight in determining your temperament

Ascendant Sign

3.0

The most important factor — defines the temperament base

Ascendant Ruler

2.0

Multiplied by the planet's dignity

Solar Phase

1.0

Which zodiac quadrant the Sun was in

Lunar Phase

1.0

The angular relationship between Sun and Moon

Lord of Nativity

Tiebreaker

Only enters if there's a tie between qualities

Why Does This Matter?

Understanding your temperament changes how you see everything

When you discover you're Melancholic, you finally understand why you need more time alone to process emotions — and stop blaming yourself for it. When you discover you're Choleric, you understand why you lose patience in meetings going nowhere. When you discover you're Sanguine, you understand why you get bored so quickly. When you discover you're Phlegmatic, you understand why you absorb other people's emotions.

Self-Knowledge

Understand your reaction patterns, your emotional needs, and why certain situations drain your energy while others energize you.

Relationships

Discover why you and your partner react differently to the same situation. Complementary temperaments create balance; similar ones amplify.

Career

Align your professional choices with your nature. A Melancholic in outside sales will suffer; a Sanguine locked away without interaction will wither.

How We Calculate

It's not a quiz. It's not a guess. It's astronomy.

1

We identify your Ascendant and its sign — the most important factor (weight 3.0)

2

We analyze the Ascendant ruling planet, its position and dignity

3

We determine your solar phase (which zodiac quadrant the Sun was in)

4

We determine your lunar phase (the angular relationship between Sun and Moon)

5

In case of a tie, the Lord of Nativity breaks it

We use the Swiss Ephemeris for precision astronomical calculations and the Placidus house system. Each dignity is considered as a multiplier.
